Mechanism of Action: Sympathomimetics stimulate alpha 1 and beta 2 receptor sites in smooth muscle of blood vessels, GI tract and genitourinary tract. Produce increased contractility in heart (beta-1) and bronchodialation (beta-2)
Adverse Effects: Sympathomimetics alpha: necrosis, hypertension; beta: headaches, tremors, nervousness, fatigue, hypertension, nausea, vomitting, SOB
Mechanism of Action: Sympatholytics reduce delivery of catecholamines (sympathetic mimicing chemical compounds) to the adrenergic receptors
Adverse Effects: Sympatholytics orthostatic hypotension, edema, headaches, dizziness, somnolence, fatigue, anxiety, pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
Indications: Sympathomimetics hypotension, nasal decongestion, dilation of pupils, adjuncts to anesthesia to reduce bleeding
Indications: Sympatholytics hypertension, dysrhythmias, angina, heart failure, glaucoma, migraines
Mechanism of Action: Parasympathomimetics increase concentration of acetylcholine at transmission sites, prolonging their actions; also: some produces reversible cholinesterase (an enzyme that splits acetylcholine into acetic acid and choline) inhibition
Indications: Parasympathomimetics glaucoma, atonic constipation (form loss of muscle tone), intestinal ileus (blockage), urinary retention, dysrhythmias, Alzheimer's disease
Adverse Effects: Parasympathomimetics flushing, sweating, abdominal cramps, headache, GI distress, diarrhea, colic, nausea/vomiting
Mechanism of Action: Parasympatholytics selectively block all muscarine (a parasympathetic receptor) responses to ACH (excitatory or inhibitory); depresses CNS and relieve rigidity and tremors (i.e. in Parkinson's)
Indications of Parasympatholytics Adjunct treatment in GI disorders (IBS, peptic ulcers, spastic disorders); dilation of the eye, paralysis of the ciliary (eyelid)muscles of the eye, inflammation of the iris; also used in general anesthesia, bradycardia and asystole (lack of heartbeat)
Adverse Effects: Parasympatholytics headache, ataxia
