Describes different kinds of things having to with nuclear stuff
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is radioactivity? | Radioactivity is the process in which a nucleus gives off nuclear radiation. |
| What are the types of decay? | Alpha Decay, Beta Decay, and Gamma Decay |
| What is Alpha decay? | Alpha decay is a particle that has 2 protons and 2 neutrons, and has the nucleus of a helium atom. It has the least penetrating power and can be stopped by paper or clothing. |
| What is Beta decay? | Beta decay is a particle that has of an electron or positron. The particle comes from a broken down neutron. It has a greater traveling distance and penetrating power than Alpha particles and can be stopped by aluminum. Atomic# +1, Mass# same |
| What is Gamma decay? | Pure energy (light). Energy levels change but the substance does not. |
| What are some dangers of radiation? | Radiation can cause radiation sickness, it can damage cells and cause cancer, and can damage the structures of building. |
| What are some uses of radiation? | - Carbon dating - Medicine: Used as tracers to check the function of internal organs - Radioactive isotopes used to find leaks in piping |
| What is nuclear fission? | When a large nucleus splits into 2 smaller nuclei and releases neutrons. A nuclear chain reaction is a series of back to back fissions. |
| What is a controlled and uncontrolled chain reaction? What are some advantages? | Controlled - Nuclear Reactor Uncontrolled - Nuclear bomb; weapon Advantages: Less pollution, energy production cheaper |
| What are some disadvantages to nuclear fissions? | Nuclear waste, potential danger of nuclear catastrophe, high cost to build nuke plants. |
| What is nuclear fusion? | 2 Nuclei combine and form larger nucleus. |
| What are some advantages and disadvantages of nuclear fusion? | Advantages: Less waste, less accident prone, lots of material (hydrogen and water) Disadvantages: Needs high temperatures and pressure and uses way more energy than produces |
| What is plasma? | State of matter when electrons are removed from atoms. Consists of electrons and ions Examples: Lightning, neon lights, fluorescent lights, fire, Stars |
