Mechanism of Action: Benzodiazepines ability to potentiate GABA neurotransmitter
Side Effects: Benzodiazepines drowsiness, ataxia, dry mouth, fatigue, impaired judgement, rebound insomnia tolerance (all are CIV)
Mechanism of Action: Benzodiazepine-like Drugs agonist at the benzo receptor site on GABA receptor channel complex
Side Effects: Benzodiazepine-like Drugs Daytime drowsiness (zolpidem); Headache, nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, myalgia and abdominal pain (zaleplon); increase levels of prolactin (hormone regulates lactation, sexual arousal etc), reduce testosterone , galactorrhoea (spontaneous lactation)
Mechanism of Action: Barbituates change the action of GABA by mimicing its effects. Stimulates influx of chloride ions that interact with the GAB receptor and suppress the ability of neurons to fire (exerting a depressant effect).
Side Effects: Barbituates ataxia, drowsiness, dizziness, hangover effect, nausea, vomiting, night terrors, headache, constipation; Long term use: bone and/or muscle pain, anorexia and weight loss
