Physical Properties Properties of objects and substances observed without changing the make-up of the matter.
Magnetism Ability to attract iron.
Physical State State in which matter can be described as solid, liquid, gas.
Appearance Color, size, shape, texture, luster (how a substance reflects light).
Temperature Amount of heat in matter (measured in degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit).
Mass A measure of the amount of matter in a solid, liquid, or gas. (measured in grams).
Weight Measure of the force of gravity on an object.
Hardness Ability of a substance to resist being scratched.
Conduction The direct transfer of heat or electricity between objects that touch.
Insulator A material that doesn't allow heat, sound or electrical energy to move through it easily.
Heat Transfer of thermal energy between substances that are at different temperatures.
States of Matter Matter that exists as a solid, liquid, or gas.
Solid Matter that has a definite shape and volume.
Liquid Matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape.
Gas Matter that has no definite volume or shape.
Solution A type of mixture that looks like a single substance and has the same properties throughout.
Solvent A substance that dissolves another to form a solution (water).
Constant A quantity that always has the same value.
Freezing point The temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a solid.
Vaporization Process in which matter changes from a liquid to a gas or vapor state (temperature may be at boiling point).
Dissolving The process of evenly mixing a solute in a solvent.
Saturated A solution that contains the maximum amount of dissolved substances at a given temperature.
Melting point The temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid.
Condensation Process in which matter changes from a gas or vapor state to a liquid state (temperature below its boiling point).
Mixture A combination of two or more substances.
Solute A substance that is dissolved in another to form a solution (sugar).
Boiling point The temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas.
Evaporation Process by which matter changes from a liquid to a gas or vapor state (temperature same as boiling point).
