| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| momentum | the product of an objects massand its velocity |
| formula for momentum | m=pv |
| Law of conservation of momentum | the total momentum of any group of objects remains the same unless outside forces act upon the objects |
| Force | a push or pull that gives energy to an object |
| Units of force | forces are measured in Newtons;N |
| Net force | the total of all forces acting on an object |
| Inertia | the tendency of matter to resist a change in its motion |
| Balanced Forces | the net force acting on an object is zero |
| Unbalanced force | the net force acting on an object is not zero |
| Magnitude | the amount of a measurement |
| Friction | a force that one surface exerts on another when the two surfaces are in contact with each other |
| Static Friction | friction between non-moving objects |
| Kinetic Friction | friction between moving objects |
| Sliding Friction | friction between objects that slide against each other |
| Rolling Friction | occurs when an oblects rolls over a surface |
| Fluid Friction | occurs when an object moves through a fluid or gas |
| Newtons First Law of Motion | objects at rest will stay at rest and objects in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force |
| Newtons Second Law of Motion | the net force acting on an object is equal to the product of the objects mass and acceleration |
| Newtons Third Law of Motion | for every action force there is a reaction force that is equal but acts in the opposite direction |
| Freefall | the motion of an object whe gravity is the only force acting on it |
| Terminal Velocity | greatest velocity of a falling object occurs when the force of GRAVITY is EQUAL to the force of FRICTION |
| Weight | a measure of the force of GRAVITY on an object |
| Mass | the amount of matter in something |
| Centripetal Force | the force that is pulling an object in curcular motion towards the center of the circle |
| Geosynchronous Orbit | occurs when an object orbits another object at a rate equal to the 2nd object's rate of rotation |
