QuestionAnswer
Fungi are Single-cell organisms like Mushrooms, yeasts, and molds
Eukaryotic (defined nucleus) fungus, animal cell, and green plant cell
Prokaryotic (no defined nucleus) bacteria
Fungi differ from green plants because they Lack chlorophyll & they Reproduce by spores
Fungi Have rigid cell wall unlike that of bacteria
In what ways are human cells fungi different from cells? Human cell membranes contain cholesterol, and cell membranes of fungi contain ergosterol.
Systemic fungal diseases most likely to occur in immunosuppressed by disease or drug therapy (corticosteroids or antineoplastics)
Fungi can cause skin and nail infections
Women on antibiotics often need antifungal for vaginal yeast infection
Aspergillus causes aspergillosis
Blastomyces causes blastomycosis
The yeast candida causes candidiasis
Coccidioides causes coccidioidomycosis
Cryptococcus causes Cryptococcus causes
Histoplasma causes histoplasmosis
Antifungals have amphotericin B (Abelcet (ABLC), AmBisome, Amphocin, Amphotec, Fungizone), clotrimazole (Mycelex), flucytosine (Ancobon), griseofulvin (Fulvicin P/G, Gris-PEG, ketoconazole (Nizoral), nystatin (Mycostatin), terbinafine (Lamisil), & terconazole (Terazol)
Antifungals have Echinocandin like anidulafungin (Eraxis), caspofungin (Cancidas), & micafungin (Mycamine)
Antifungals have Triazole like fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), posaconazole (Noxafil), & voriconazole (VFEND)
Antifungals Prevent synthesis of ergosterol, building block for fungal cell membranes
Human cell membranes Use cholesterol & are Affected minimally by antifungals
Antifungals Inhibit fungal cytochrome P-450 are Different from human P-450 & Have little effect on human cells
Antifungals destroys fungi
Antifungals have Three forms Topical agents, IV agents, & Systemic agents
There are Reports of serious side effects, even for topical agents
Pay close attention to dosing regimen to avoid overdosing Antifungals
amphotericin B (Fungizone) are Used for blood-born, life-threatening fungal infections
Blood levels of amphotericin B (Fungizone) are monitored and vitals checked during infusion
amphotericin B (Fungizone) is Infused slowly. Not piggybacked, not mixed with normal saline
