Periodic Table

| Periodic Table | An arrangement of elements in columns, based on a set of properties that repeat from row to row. |
| Period | Each row in the table of elements. As period numbers increase, so do the orbitals for the elements included in that period. |
| Group | Each column on the periodic table. Elements within the same group and similiar properties. |
| Periodic Law | The pattern of repeating properties in the periodic table. |
| Atomic Mass Unit (amu) | One twelfth the mass of a carbon-12 atom. |
| Metals | Elements that are good conductors of electric current and heat. |
| Transition Metals | Elements that form a bridge between the left and right side of the periodic table. They have the ability to form compounds with distinctive colors. |
| Nonmetals | Elements that are poor conductors of heat and electric current. |
| Metalloids | Elements with properties that fall between those of metals and nonmetals. |
| Valence Electron | An electron that is in the highest occupied energy level of an atom. |
| Alkali Metals | Elements in Group 1A of the periodic table. They have a single valence electron and are extremely reactive. |
| Alkaline Earth Metals | Elements in Group 2A of the periodic table. They have two valence electrons and are harder than metals in Group 1A. |
| Halogens | Elements in Group 7A. They have seven valence electrons. |
| Noble Gas | Elements in Group 8A. They have eight valence electrons (except for Helium which has two) and they are colorless, odorless, and extremely unreactive. |
| Mendeleev's Proposal | Arrangment of the elements into rows in order of increasing mass so that elements with similar properties were in the same column. |
| Mendeleev's Prediction | Using the properties of existing elements to predict properties of undiscovered elements. |
