chapter 4 part 6

QuestionAnswer
Ketolides Bind to ribosomal subunits and block protein synthesis
Ketolides May inhibit newly forming ribosomes
Bacteria resistant to macrolides, lincomycin derivatives, and streptogramins is also resistant to ketolides
Ketolides are Used to treat bacterial infections in lungs and sinuses
Ketolides telithromycin (Ketek)
Quinolones are Strong, rapid bactericidal action against Most gram-negative bacteria & Many gram-positive bacteria
Quinolones Antagonize enzyme responsible for coiling and replicating DNA, causing DNA breakage and cell death
Quinolones ciprofloxacin (Cipro), gatifloxacin (Tequin), gemifloxacin (Factive), levofloxacin (Levaquin), moxifloxacin (Avelox), norfloxacin (Noroxin), & ofloxacin (Floxin)
Therapeutic Uses of Quinolones are Bone and joint infections caused by gram-negative organisms, Infectious diarrhea, Ophthalmic infections, Some sexually transmitted diseases, Upper respiratory infections, & Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Side Effects of Quinolones are Primarily G I, with nausea and vomiting, Some joint swelling, dizziness, & bad taste, joint problems & malformations, Patients might injure tendons, don't give Quinolones with theophylline, Antacids interfere with absorption, & Avoid sun
Streptogramins Inhibit protein synthesis within the bacterial ribosomes
Streptogramins are the Alternative to vancomycin
Side effects of Streptogramins similar to quinolones such as nausea, vomiting, joint swelling, dizziness
Streptogramins quinupristin-dalfopristin (Synercid)
Aminoglycosides are Used to treat serious infections
Aminoglycosides Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to ribosomal subunits
After first dose, dosages of Aminoglycosides should adjusted according to plasma concentrations
Aminoglycosides are amikacin (Amikin), gentamicin (Garamycin), kanamycin (Kantrex), neomycin (Mycifradin, Neo-Fradin, Neo Rx), streptomycin (none), & tobramycin (Nebcin)
Side Effects of Aminoglycosides are Nephrotoxicity (destructive to kidney)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
