Major Classes of Antibiotic Drugs are Sulfonamides, Pencillins, Cephalosporins, Tetracyclines and Tigecycline, Macrolides, Ketolides, Quinolones, Streptogramins, Aminoglycosides, & Cyclic Lipopetides
Sulfonamides are Effective against a broad range of microorganisms
Sulfonamides Block specific steps in biosynthetic pathway of folic acid
Sulfonamides Interfere with PABA and folic acid formation, thereby destroying bacteria
Sulfonamides names are sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (Bactrim, Bactrim DS, Cotrim, Cotrim DS, Septra, Septra DS), sulfasalazine(Azulfidine),sulfisoxazole (Gantrisin)
sulfa Related drugs are nitrofurantoin (Macrobid, Macrodantin)
If the patient is allergic to sulfa, then the drug of choice is nitrofurantoin (Macrobid, Macrodantin) which should be taken with food and drink but not alcohol
The Therapeutic Uses of Sulfonamides are Urinary tract infections (UTIs), & Otitis media, Ulcerative colitis, Lower respiratory infections
Prophylaxis is Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in immunocompromised
The Side Effects of Sulfonamides are Rash, Nausea, Drug fever, Vomiting, Jaundice, Kidney damage, & Blood complications
