Why are theories useful to researchers and educators? They help explain a body of data and make predictions about future behaviors.
The four periods of development are segmented based on: The age of the children
What are Piaget's stages of Cognitive Development? Sensorimotor, Preoperational, Operational, and Formal Operational
Sensorimotor The child knows the world through their actions (i.e.sucking, throwing, pounding)They know what they see, out of sight out of mind
Preoperational Uses symbols, such as pretending and language, but thinkin relies on appearances. They may believe that they can "catch up" to a sibling in age, or may confuse past/future
Operational Able to think about and reverse actions mentally, as long as they have personally experience/dealt with the object
Formal Operational Mental operations on abstract ideas and objects that are imagined- not ecountered personally
Prenatal Period Conception--> birth
Infancy birth-->2
Early Childhood 2-->6
Middle Childhood 6-->11
Adolescence 11-->20+
