| adrenergics | symp. nervous system stimulant, parasymp. nervous system depressant. behaves similarly to antihistamines while stim. the CNS |
| antiadrenergics | block secretion of epinephrine and norepinephrine; antagonize the adrenergics; symp. depressant |
| analeptics | stimulates CNS |
| antiarrhythmics | suppresses cardiac arrhythmia |
| anticholinergics | antagonize acetylcholine; depress parasymp. NS; similar to symp. NS stimulants |
| antihypertensives | reduce BP by causing vasodilation |
| antipyretics | reduce fever |
| antitussives | inhibit cough (narcotic or nonnarcotic) |
| cholinergics | mimic or stimulate acetylcholine; stim. parasymp. NS |
| antipruritics | relieve itching temporarily |
| astringents | cause shrinkage of skin or mucous membrane tissue; reducing secretions |
| counterirritants | relieve irritation in a deeper structure by causing a local irritation |
| demulcents/emollients/protectives | coat, protect and soothe skin and mucous membranes |
| cleansers | cleanse skin |
| mouthwashes/gargles | cleansing, local therapy |
| antiinflammatory agents | counteracts inflammatory reactions and may also be an analgesic and antipyretic; can be steroidal (glucocorticoids) or nonsteroidal (NSAIDS) |
| cardiac glycosides | increase the strength of myocardial contraction to increase efficiency of heart |
| cycloplegics | paralyze ciliary muscles of accomodators in the eye |
| chemotherapeutic agents | toxic to normal and cancerous cells |
| mydriatics | dilate the pupil |
| miotics | constrict the pupil |
| amebecides/trichomonacides | eradicates amebae |
| antihelmintics | rid the body of parasitic worms and helminths |
| antibiotics/antiinfectives/antimicrobials | kills microorganisms or inhibits/prevents their growth |
| antifungals | kills or checks the growth of fungi/yeasts |
| antimalarials | antiinfective agents prevent or cure malaria |
| scabicides | rids the skin of infestation with mites |
| antiseptics/disinfectants | kills or inhibits growth of microorganisms, some can be applied to living tissue, usually used on inanimate objects |
| sulfonamides | bacteriostatic agents used to fight gram- and gram+ microorganisms |
| antivirals | given prior to or immed. after viral infection |
| analgesics | CNS depressant, interfere with nerve impulse conduction of pain perception |
| anesthetics | some produce unconsciousness and loss of sensation by blocking the conduction of impulse to the brain from nerves to which they are injected, or applied, producing no loss in consciousness |
| antiseizure/antiepileptic/anticonvulsant | prevent or treat seizures or convulsions |
| hypnotics | cause sleep to occur - higher dosage than sedatives |
| sedatives | cause quieting and drowsiness - lower dosage than hypnotics |
| Antacids | mineral drugs that reduce or neutralize HCl in stomach |
| Antidiarrheals | inhibit diarrhea and hypermobility of the GI tract |
| antiemetics | prevent or treat nausea/vomiting |
| antiflatulants | used for relief of gastric or intestinal distention caused by gas |
| cathartics (laxatives/purgatives) | encourage or cause bowel evacuation. laxative is a mild cathartic, purgative is a strong cathartic |
| diuretics | increase the production of urine and decrease extracellular fluid |
| emetics | causes vomiting |
| expectorants | assist with the removal of mucus, secretions and exudate from the respiratory tract |
| cathartics | induces emptying of the bowl |
| stimulant cathartics (Dulcolax) | irritate intestinal mucosa to increase motility; not absorbed systemically |
| saline cathartic (Milk of Magnesia) | osmotic effect increases bulk of stool by attracting H2O, mechanically stimulates peristalsis, acts in 1-2 hours, also acts as an antacid as it neutralizes HCl |
| bulk-forming cathartic (Metamucil) | absorbs and retains large amts of fluid to increase bulk of feces, mechanical stimulation of peristalsis |
| emollient or wetting agent (cathartic) (Colace) | detergents that lower the surface tension of feces and promote penetration of H20 and fats to soften stool |
| lubricant (cathartic) (mineral oil) | retards absorption of water from intestinal lumen; coats mucosal lining and fecal material |
| antidiarrheal agents | act locally on the GI tract and are not systemically absorbed |
| fluid absorbents (Kaopectate) | individual particles of these preps have large surface areas and are believed to absorb flui and toxic substances |
| motility suppressants (Lomotil) | systemic agent which acts to increase the tone of the intestinal musculative, ileocecal valve and anal sphincter to slow expulsion of intestinal contents; inhibits GI motility |
