Atomic Structure Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Define nucleus. A dense, positively charged mass located in the center of the atom.
Define electron. A negatively charged subatmoic particle that is found in the space outside the nucleus.
Define atomic number. The number of protons an element has.
Define mass number. THe sum of the protons and nuetrons in the nucleus of an atom.
Define electron cloud. Visual model of the most likely locations for electrons in an atom.
Define ground state. When all electrons in an atom have the lowest possible energies.
Define Dalton's Atomic Theory. Matter is made up of individual particles called atoms, which can not be divided.
Define Thomson's Model of the Atom. Atoms are made of even small particles.
Define Rutherford's Atomic Theory. An atom's positive charge is concentrated in its nucleus.
Define Bohr's Model of the Atom. Electron's move in spherical orbits at dixed distances from the nucleus.
