Matter
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| matter | anything that has volume and mass |
| mass | a measure of the amount of matter in an object |
| mixture | different kinds of matter mixed together |
| volume | a measure of how much space an object takes up |
| property | any characteristic of matter that you can observe |
| element | a building block of matter |
| gravity | a pulling force between two objects, such as you and earth |
| weight | a measure of the pull of gravity on an object |
| states of matter | a form of matter, such as solid, liquid, and gas |
| solid | matter that has a definite shape and volume |
| liquid | matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape |
| gas | matter that has no definite shape or volume |
| solution | a mixture in which one or more kinds of matter are mixed evenly in another |
| physical change | a change in the way matter looks |
| chemical change | a change that causes different kinds of matter to form |
| What is matter? | Matter is anything that takes up space. |
| What is matter made of? | Matter is made of elements. |
| What are some examples of properties? | shape, color, taste, feels, sounds |
| How is mass measured? | You can measure with a pan balance |
| How are mass and weight different? | your weight can change with the pull of gravity, your mass will not change it is your size. |
| What are the 3 states of matter? | solid, liquid, and gas |
| Describe solids | The particles are packed tight and close together. It takes up a definite shape and has its own shape. |
| Describe liquids. | Have a definite volume but not a definite shape. A liquid takes the shape of its container. The amount (volume) stays the same, the shape can change with the container. The particles can slide past one another. |
| Describe gases. | Has no definite shape or volume. The particles are farther apart and move freely with more energy |
