Waves Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
The unit of frequency. Measurement of one cycle per second. Hertz
A repetitive force Periodic Force
A wave that has oscillations that are NOT in the direction it moves. Transverse Wave
An exceptionally large amplitude that develops when a periodic force is applied to the natural frequency. Resonance
A Traveling oscillation that has properties of frequency, wavelength, and amplitude. Wave
The time it takes for each complete cycle. Period
A device that swings back and forth due to the force of gravity. Pendulum
A form of energy that travels at 300,000km/s (186,000 mi/s) and includes all the colors that can be seen by the human eye. Light
The wave bends as it passes into and through an object. Refraction
The wave is absorbed and disappears. Absorption
The process of bouncing off a surface. Reflection
The wave bends around an object or through holes in the objects. Diffraction
The amount that a cycle moves away from equilibrium. Amplitude
Light containing an equal mix of all colors. White Light
A unit of motion that repeats. Cycle
A wave that has oscillations that are in the direction it moves. Longitudinal Wave
The smallest possible amount of light. Photon
The distance from any point on a wave to the same point on the next cycle of the wave. Wavelength
A physical system that has repeating cycles. Oscillator
How often something repeats, expressed in hertz. Frequency
The frequency at which a system oscillates when disturbed. Natural frequency
The sensation created by the different energies of light falling on your eye. Color
A motion that goes from one place to another without repeating. Linear Motion
A motion that repeats in cycles. Harmonic Motion
The entire range of electromagnetic waves including all possible frequencies such as radio waves, microwaves, x-rays, and gamma rays. Electromagnetic Spectrum
A wave of electricity and magnetism that travels at the speed of light. (Light is also included) Electromagnetic Wave

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
