How Atoms Form Compounds

compound a pure substance that contains two or more elements
chemical formula a shorthand expression that uses atomic symbols and subscripts to show the elements and the number of atoms of each element that combine to form a compound
molecule neutral particle that forms as a result of electron sharing
chemical bond a force that holds atoms together in a compound
ionic bond an electrical attraction between positively and negatively charged ions in an ionic compound
valence the number of electrons in the outer-most energy level of the atoms of an element
covalent bond a chemical bond that forms when atoms share electrons
