Vital Sign Vocabulary

| Tachypnea | fast respiratory rate above 25 respirations per minute. |
| bradypnea | slow respiratory rate, usually below 10 respirations per minute. |
| tachycardia | fast or rapid heartbeat. |
| bradycardia | slow heart rate, usually below 60 beats per minute. |
| systole | the normal rhythmical contraction of the heart, during which the blood in the chambers is forced onward. |
| asystole | the absence of heartbeat; cardiac arrest. |
| eupnea | normal relaxed breathing. |
| apnea | absence of respirations; temporary cessation of respirations. |
| hyperpnea | an increase in the breathing rate or in the depth of breathing, as after strenuous exercise. |
| bounding | forceful pulse that quickly disappears. |
| thready | barely perceptible, weak, fine heartbeat. |
| hyperventilation | a condition characterized by abnormally prolonged and rapid breathing, resulting in decreased carbon dioxide levels and increased oxygen levels that produce faintness, tingling of the fingers and toes, and, if continued, loss of conciousness. |
| dyspnea | difficult or labored breathing. |
| fever | is an elevated body temperature usually above 101 degrees. |
| febrile | pertaining to or marked by fever; feverish. |
| afebrile | without fever; feverless. |
| angina | any attack of painful spasms characterized by sensations of choking or suffocating. |
| wheezing | difficulty breathing with a high-pitched whistling or sighing sound during expiration. |
| rales | bubbling or noisy sound caused by fluid or mucus in the air passages. |
| rhonchi | a wheezing or snoring sound heard upon auscultation of the chest, caused by an accumulation of mucus or other material. |
| orthopnea | severe dyspnea in which breathing is very difficult in any position other than sitting erect or standing. |
