GEHS-Hughes Unit 7

GEHS-Hughes Matter, Physical & Chemical Properties

QuestionAnswer
SOLID *Definate Shape and Volume *least amount of energy *sound travels fastest in this state
LIQUID *Definate Volume and NO definate shape *medium amount of kinetic energy *takes shape of container it is in
GAS *NO definate shape or volume *highest amount of kinetic energy *sound travels slowest in this state
SOLID Molecules vibrate next to each other, VERY densely packed.
LIQUID Molecules glide over each other, and least densely packed.
GAS Molecules move anywhere,loose particles.
Matter Anything that takes up space(volume)and has mass. The BIGGEST particle of all.
Molecules a little smaller than matter.
Elements a little smaller than molecules.
Atom a little smaller than elements.
Subatomic particles a little smaller than an atom, but larger than quarks.
Quarks SMALLEST particle of all (charges).
Plasma Found in stars, most abundant in the universe.
Kinetic Theory of Matter All objects are made of tiny particles that bump together. Increase temp, bumping increases. Decrease temp, bumping decreases.
Physical Property a characteristic of matter that can be observed or measured without changing an object.
Pysical Change Examples: *crushing rock *reshape wax *melting ice *shiny *solid. Something that can be easily undone, Does not change into a different substance, Can change states of matter.
Chemical Property property of matter that describes how a substance changes into a new substance.
Chemical Change Examples: *baking cookies *produce a gas *flammable or explosive elements.Changes to something else.
Sublimation a solid turns into a gas
States of Matter Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma
Melting and Freezing Point both occur at the same temperature.
Freezing Point a liquid turns into a solid. (exothermic)
Condensation a change of state from a liquid to a gas.
Evaporation a change from a liquid to a gas.
Latent Heat heat added that does not change the temperature of the substance, but causes a phase change.
Independent Variable What is different that is being tested?
Dependent Variable What can be measured (size, number).

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
