Principles of Design

The Language of Art

QuestionAnswer
What is balance? Arranging elements of art according to their "visual weight".
What is emphasis? Controlling what elements and objects stand out in a work of art.
What is pattern? A repeated use of an element in a regular way.
What is proportion? How parts of an artwork relate to each other and to the whole.
What is rhythm? A sense of visual or actual motion in an artwork, created by repeating visual elements.
What is unity? When the elements of art and the principles of design in a composition belong together.
What is variety? Combining one or more elements of art to provide interest.
