| Acceleration Formula | final velocity-starting velocity/time it takes to change velocity |
| Positive Acceleration & Examples | acceleration in which velocity increases, a plane taking off. |
| Negative Acceleration & Examples | acceleration in which velocity decreases, car stopping at a sign. |
| Centripetal Acceleration & Example | acceleration that occurs in a circular motion, the blades on a windmill |
| Force | a push or a pull. |
| Newton (N) | the unit used to measure force |
| Net Force | the force that results from combining all the forces exerted on an object. |
| Why are unbalanced forces necessary to cause movement ? | they produce acceleration. |
| Balanced Forces | forces applied to an object to produce a net force of zero |
| Friction | a force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are touching. |
| Sources of Friction | when two surfaces come in contact the hills and valleys on the surfaces stich to each other. |
| Relationship between greater force & friction | the amount of friction depends on the force pushing the surfaces together. |
| Sliding Friction | if you push an eraser across your desk the eraser will move for a short distance and then stop. |
| Rolling Friction | using wheels to move an object the friction between the wheels and the floor is rolling friction. |
| Fluid Friction | friction is reduced by using a liquid |
| Ways to reduce friction – lubricants | substances that are applied to surfaces to reduce the friction between them. |
| Ways to reduce friction – sandpaper | sandpaper removes the roughness from an object reducing friction |
| Ways to increase friction | to make the surfaces rougher. |
| Gravity | a force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses. |
| Why must force be used to lift objects? | because gravity is pulling them down. |
| What does the Law of Universal Gravitation state? (3 parts) | Gravitational force is small between objects with small masses. Gravitational force is larger between objects with larger masses. If the distance between two objects is increased the gravitational force pulling them together is reduced. |
