Mr. Biando's Lab

Mr. Biando's Lab - Interaction of light waves

DefinitionTerm
The bouncing back of a ray of light, sound, or heat when the ray hits a surface that it does not go through. Reflection
The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection. The Law of Reflection
The line perpendicular to a object's surface. Normal
The beam of light traveling toward the surface. incident beam
The beam of light reflected off the surface of an object. reflected beam
The angle between the incident beam and the normal. Angle of incidence
The angle between the the reflected beam and the normal. Angle of reflection
When a light beam reflects off the surface in the same angle. Regular reflection
When the light beam is reflected off the surface in many different angles. Diffused reflection
Objects that produce visable light luminous
A visable object that is not a light source. illuminated
Objects that produce visable light. Light source
In optics, the transfer of light energy to particles of matter. Light Absorption
An interaction of light with matter that causes light to change its energy, direction of motion, or both. Light Scattering
The bending of a wave as the wave passes between two substances in which the speed of the wave differs. Refraction
The bending of a visable light wave which makes an object appear to be in a location that it is not. Optical Illusion
A change in the direction of a wave when the wave finds an obstacle or an edge, such as an opening. Diffraction
The combination of two or more waves that results in a single wave. Interference
When the combination of the two light waves increases the amplitude which result in a brighter light. Constructive interference
When the combination of two light waves decrease a waves amplitude which results in a dimmer light. Destructive Interference
A piece of glass, clear plastic, or water droplets that can seperate white light into colors by refraction. prism
An optical effect produced by water droplets refracting white light in the atmosphere. rainbow
Scattering short light waves in the atmosphere cause this to happen. blue sky

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
