AP Psych Ch 3
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Genotype | Genetics |
Phenotype | Physical Characteristics |
Motor Neurons | Carry messages from CNS to muscles and glands |
Sensory Neurons | Carry messages from sense receptors to the CNS |
Interneurons | Carries messages between nerve cells |
Axon | Branched fibers that conducts info from the soma to the terminal buttons |
Soma | Cell body, which contains the nucleus |
Dendrite | (Message receiver) Branched fibers that conducts info into the neuron and extend |
Myelin Sheath | Insulating covering of the axon for neurons |
Resting potential | -70 charge and is ready to fire |
Action Potential | The charge after it has crossed the threshold |
Synapse | Communication link between neurons |
Terminal Buttons | Tiny bubble-like structures at the end of the axon which contain neurotransmitters that carry the neurons message into the synapse |
Synaptic Vesicles | Bubbles that hold the terminal buttons |
Neurotransmitters | Chemical messengers that relay neural messages across the synapse |
Plasticity | Ability of the nervous system to adapt or change the result of experience |
Glial Cells | Provide structural support for neurons |
CNS | Brain and spinal cord |
PNS | Autonomatic (Involuntary actions) breathing and heartbeat |
Somatic nervous system | Voluntary actions, such as walking and talking |
Sympathetic Branch | (Fight or Flight) sends messages to the internal organs and glands that help us to respond to stressful and emergency situations |
Parasympathetic Branch | (Normal Balance) Part of the autonomic nervous system that monitors the routine |
Endocrine System | (The hormone system)The body's chemical messenger system, including the endocrine glands |
Hormones | A chemical messenger used by the endocrine system |
Pituitary Gland | Main gland of the body |
Agonist | Drug/Chemical that enhances or mimics the effects of the NTs |
Antagonist | Blocks receptor sites |
EEG | NOT A SCAN. Records brain waves |
CT Scan | Looks at the brain with x-rays from different angles |
PET Scan | Glucose in brain (Dye is injected) shows activity |
MRI | Most detailed picture of the brain |
