Wave any disturbance that transmits energy through matter or space
Medium substance through which a wave can travel
Energy transfers through a medium when a particle vibrates it can pass its energy to a particle next to it. Then the particle will begin to vibrate as well.
Sound waves work require a medium, travels by the vibration of particles in liquids, solids, and gases
Ocean waves transfer energy by traveling through water. Waves that require a medium are called mechanical waves.
Electromagnetic waves waves that do not require a medium

Waves are classified based on the direction in which the particles of the medium vibrate compared with the direction in which the wave travels
Transfer waves vibrate with an up and down motion
Longitudinal waves the particles of the medium vibrate back and forth along the path that the wave travels
Amplitude the maximum distance the wave vibrates from its rest position
Wavelength distance between any two adjacent crests or compressions in a series of waves
Frequency the number of waves produced in a given amount of time
Wave speed the speed at which a wave travels

Reflection occurs when a wave bounces back after striking a barrier
Refraction the bending of a wave as it passes at an angle from one medium to another
Diffraction the bending of waves around a barrier or through an opening
Interference the result of two or more waves overlapping
