Vocabulary; Chapter 26; #2 of 2

WordMeaning
Ionosphere An electrified region within the thermos-phere and uppermost mesosphere where fairly large concentrations of ions and free electrons exist.
Solar Constant The 1400 J/m2 received from the Sun each second at the top of the Earth's atmosphere. Expressed in terms of power, it is 1.4 kW/m2.
Salinity The mass of salts dissolved in 1000 g of seawater.
Pressure Gradient Force The force that moves air from a region of high-pressure to an adjacent region of low-pressure air.
Coriolis Effect The apparent deflection from a straight-line path observed in any body moving near the Earth's surface, caused by the Earth's rotation.
Gyre Circular or spiral whirl pattern, usually applied to very large current systems in the open ocean.
