| Ionosphere | An electrified region within the thermos-phere and uppermost mesosphere where fairly large concentrations of ions and free electrons exist. |
| Solar Constant | The 1400 J/m2 received from the Sun each second at the top of the Earth's atmosphere. Expressed in terms of power, it is 1.4 kW/m2. |
| Salinity | The mass of salts dissolved in 1000 g of seawater. |
| Pressure Gradient Force | The force that moves air from a region of high-pressure to an adjacent region of low-pressure air. |
| Coriolis Effect | The apparent deflection from a straight-line path observed in any body moving near the Earth's surface, caused by the Earth's rotation. |
| Gyre | Circular or spiral whirl pattern, usually applied to very large current systems in the open ocean. |
