QuestionAnswer
Radiation the emission of energy through EM waves
Particle wave theory of light
Electromagnetic Spectrum the entire range of EM waves
Radio Waves cover a wide variety of waves in the EM spectrum
AM Radio have longer wavelengths
FM Radio have shorter wavelengths
Ionosphere the layer of earth’s atmosphere where radio waves bounce off
Microwaves shorter wavelengths and higher frequency than radio waves
Radar the use of microwaves to tell the distance and speed of an object
Infrared Waves waves sent by the sun that is absorbed by your skin
Visible Light the very narrow range of wavelengths that the human can see
Ultraviolet Light waves produced by the sun that have shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies than visible light
X Rays
Gamma Rays large amounts of energy that can go through objects easily
Law of Reflection states that the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection
Regular Reflection light beams off all points of a surface at the same angle
Diffuse reflection occurs when light beams at many different angles
Absorption the transfer of energy carried by light waves to particles of matter
Scattering the release of light through particles of matter that have absorbed energy
Transmission the passing of light through matter
Transparent matter through witch visible light is easily transmitted
Opaque matter that does not translate any light
Translucent matter transmits light but also scatters the light as it passes through the matter
Primary Colors of Light Red, blue, and green
Pigment a material that gives a substance its color by absorbing some colors of light and reflecting others
Primary Pigments yellow, cyan, and magenta
Prism a piece of glass that separates white light into colors of visible light by refraction
Plane Mirror mirrors that are flat
Concave Mirror mirrors that are curved inward
Convex Mirror mirrors that are curved outward
Virtual Image : an image (as seen in a plane mirror) formed of virtual foci
Real Image an optical image formed of real foci
Concave Lens thinner in the middle than around the edges
Convex Lens thicker in the middle than the edges
Retina the back surface of the eye
Nearsightedness when the eye is too long and it focuses light in front of the retina
Farsightedness when the eye is too short and focuses light farther away from the retina
Colorblindness not being able to see colors
Rods one of the rod
Cones One of the cone
Laser a device that produces intense light of one color
Hologram a piece of film on which an interference pattern produces a three dimensional version of an object
Maiman created the first laser
Dennis Gaber invented hologram

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
