PERSONALITY AND SOCIAL INTERACTION

situational selection form of interactionism which refers to tendency to choose/select situations in which one finds oneself. People do not usually find themselves in random situations in their natural lives - they select/choose situations in which they will spend their time
complementary needs theory (of attraction) "Opposites attract". True in biological sex choices - women tend to be attracted to men. Other than biological sex choices, this theory has not received any empirical support
attraction similarity theory (of attraction) "Birds of a feather flock together". As of 2003, this theory has proven to be dominant attraction theory, except in bio sex choices.
assortative mating Refers to phenomenon where people marry people who they are similar to. In addition to personality, people also show assortative mating on number of physical characteristics, such as height and weight
violation of desire (of comflict between sexes) break ups should occur more when one's desires are violated than when they are fulfilled - predict that people married to others who lack desired chars (e.g. dependability/emotional stability) will more frequently dissolve the marriage
shyness tendency to feel tense, worried, anxious during/in anticipation of social interactions. Common, more than 90% reported at some point. Some however are dispositionally shy
evocation [BUSS] form of person-situation interaction. Based on idea that certain personality traits may evoke consistent responses from environment, particularly the social environment.
hostile attributional bias tendency to infer hostile intent on part of others in face of ambiguous behavior from others. People who are aggressive expect that others will be hostile toward them
expectancy confirmation phenomenon whereby people's beliefs about personality char of others cause them to evoke in others actions consistent with initial beliefs. AKA self-fulfilling prophesy/behavioral confirmation
manipulation defined as various means which people intentionally/purposefully alter,change, and exploit others. Entails altering environments already inhabited. No evil/malicious intent need to be implied by term "manipulation", although such intent is not excluded.
taxonomy ID/naming of groups within particular subject field. Technical name given to classification scheme
Machiavellian tendency to use other people as tools for personal gain. "High Mach" tend to tell people what they want to hear, use flattery, rely heavily on lying to achieve own ends.
narcissism style of inflated self-admiration, constant attempt to draw attention to self and keep others focused on self. Can be extreme, but tendencies are found in normal range levels.
