QuestionAnswer
Element A type of matter in which all the atoms are the same ;cannot be broken down into simpler substances
Atom The smallest unit of an element
Compound Two or more elements that are chemically combined
Molecule The smallest unit of most compound
organic compound A compound that contains carbon
Inorganic Compound A compound that does not contain carbon
Protein Large organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and sometimes sulfur they are needed for tissue growth and repair and play a part in chemical within the cells
Lipids Energy-rich organic compounds, such as fats, oils and waxes that are made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
Amino Acids Small units that are linked together chemically to form larger protein molecules
Enzyme A protein that speeds up chemical reactions in the bodies of living things
Carbohydrate Energy-rich organic compounds, such as sugars and starches that are made up of the elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen.(They provide the raw materials to make parts of cells
Nucleic acids A very large organic molecule made of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and phosphorus that contain instructions that cells need to carry out all the function of life
DNA Deoxyribonucleic acid;the genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to off spring
RNA Ribonucleic acid a nucleic acid that plays an important role in the production of proteins.
Selectively Permeable A property of cell membranes that allows some substances to pass through, while others cannot
Diffusion The process by which molecules move from an area in which there are highly concentrated molecules ton an area in which they are less concentrated molecules.
Osmosis The diffusion of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane
Passive Transport The movement of materials through a cell membrane without using energy
Active transport The movement of materials through a cell membrane using energy
Photosynthesis The process by which a cell captures the energy in sun and uses it to make food
Pigment Colored chemical compounds that absorb light
Chlorophyll The pigments found in the chloroplasts of plants is chloropyll
Stomata Small openings under the side of the leaves that allows carbon dioxide to come in and release oxygen
Respiration The process by which cells break down simple food molecules to release the energy they contain
Fermentation The process by which cells break down molecules to release energy without using oxygen
Cell cycle The regular sequence of growth and development that cells undergo
Interphase The stage of the cell cycle that takes place before cell division occurs ; during this stage ,the cell grows copies its DNA, and prepares to divide

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
