What is Personality? Unique psychological qualities that influence a variety of characteristic patterns of behavior and ways of thinking that determines a person's adjustment to the environment.
What is a Type Theory? A distinct pattern of personality characteristics (assigned to specific categories).
What are Sheldon Somatotypes? Body Types
What are the traits of an Endomorph? (short, plump) They are sociable, relaxed, even tempered.
What are the traits of an Ectomorph? (tall, thin) They are restrained, self-conscious, fond of solitude.
What are the traits of a Mesomorph? (heavy-set, muscular) They are noisy, callous, fond of physical activity.
What was Hans Eysenck known for? His theories on introvert vs. extrovert personalities.
What are the traits of a Type A Personality? Obsessive Compulsive, Controlling, Often CEO's, Aggressive when frustrated, Impatient.
What are the traits of a Type B Personality? Patient, Relaxed, Easy-going, and at times lacking an overriding sense of Urgency.
What are Trait Theories? They are characteristic patterns of behavior or conscious motives.
What are the key points of the Trait Theory? -Assumed that most traits exist in all people to some degree and that we can measure the degree in which a trait exists in a person. -Thousands of words describe traits (narcissistic, innocent, intellectual, nice, arrogant, jerk, etc.)
What is the 5-factor Model of Personality and what does the acronym OCEAN stand for? The 5-factor Model shows that various traits tend to cluster together. O=Openness, C=Conscientiousness, E=Extroversion, A=Agreeableness, N=Neuroticism (tendency to experience negative effects)
What are the Criticisms of both Type and Trait Theories? They identify but don't explain how behavior is caused. People are not always consistent in different situations (punctuality on reg. lectures vs exam days). Traits may emerge more in familiar situations. No conception of development.
