• Wave Any Disturbance that transmits energy through matter or space
Medium A substance through which a wave can travel.
Transfer of energy through a medium When a particle vibrates the particle next to it vibrates in a similar way to the other particle.
How sound waves work Sound waves require a medium. Sound waves travel by the vibration of particles so if there are no particles present then sound is not possible.
How ocean Waves transfer energy through water
Electromagnetic waves Waves that do not require a medium
How waves are classified Based on the direction in which the particles of the medium vibrate compared with the direction in which the waves travel.
How transverse waves are classified the particles move up and down. Transverse means move across.
How are Longitudinal waves classified the particles of the medium vibrate back and forth along the path that the wave travels.
Amplitude the maximum distance the wave vibrates from its rest position.
Wavelength The distance between any 2 adjacent crests or compressions in a series of waves.
Frequency The number of waves producd in a given amount of time.
Wave speed the speed at which a wave travels
Wave speed formula v
Reflection When a wave bounces back after striking a barrier.
Refraction The bending of a wave the passes at an angle from one medium to another.
