Deductive reasoning | given some ideas, then come up with a conclusion, and based on this all else is true (cows are black, Bessie’s a cow, Bessie’s black) |
Inductive reasoning | conclusion is probably true, but not necessarily, meet people who don’t fit the conclusion |
Heuristic | rules of thumb, quick ways to make a judgment (mystery meat, is someone nice) usually lead to error |
availability heuristic | how available some information is (what kills more car accident or stroke? ) what we hear about more of from media |
confirmation bias | searching for information that proves theory, card trick |
fairness bias | people trying to be fair and make poor choices to remain fair |
hindsight bias | easier to predict past than to predict example (9/11 example) |
framing effect | people make decisions that will avoid loss rather than gain (cancer 20% to cure, 80% to kill) |
cognitive dissonance | sense of “it doesn’t go together” about self (I’m against illegal immigration, but my best friend is an illegal immigrant |
post decision dissonance | justify that is is the best, even if it isn’t (like a used car) |
justification of effort | I did it, so it must be worth it or it was a waste of time |
