QuestionAnswer
What is the total lung capacity? Total volume of air in lungs following max inspiration, 6dm
What is vital capacity? Max volume of air that can be forcibly expired after max expiration, 4.8dm
What is tidal volume? Volume of air inspired.expried per breath 500mL
Average IRV? 3.6dm
Average ERV? 1.8dm
Residual volume? Volume of air remaining in lungs after max expiration. 100mL
What is an isokinetic muscle contraction> Muscle shortens under tension while producing a movement of a constant speed e.g Breast stroke
What is the endocardium? The inner glistening membrane. It reduces friction between the heart and the blood flow.
What occurs during diastole? Relaxtion phase lasting 0.5 seconds. Both atria fill with blood and the AV valves close Atrial blood pressure raises above ventricular pressure This forces AV valves open. Blood passivly passes into both ventricles. Semilunar valves are closed
What occurs during systole? Contraction phase. Lasts 0.3 seconds. Both atria contract actively forcing remaining blood into ventricles. Semilunar valves remain closed. Both ventricles contract. Aortic and pulmonary valves forced open. AV valves closed.
Resting, sub max and max values for Stroke volume? 70mL 90mL 110mL
Resting, sub max and max values for heart rate? 72bpm 115bpm 220 - age
Resting, sub max and max values for cardiac output? 5L/min 10L/min 30L/min
What is the end diastolic volume? Volume of blood in ventricles at end of relaxation phase
What is the end systolic volume? Volume of blood in ventricles at end of contraction phase.
What nerve does the information get send along in the sympathetic nervous system? Accelerator nerve
What nerve does the information get send along in the parasympathetic nervous system? vagus nerve
What are the inspiratory muscles? External intercostals Diaphragm Sternocleidmastoid scalenes pectorialis minor
What are the expriatory muscles? Internal intercostals abdominals obliques
What does the CSA do to blood velocity? Increase in CSA decreases velocity
What is the rest and static pressure in systolic? 120 - 200
What are the rest and static pressure in dystolic? 80 - 120
Why is a cool down important? Mean a continuance of metabolic proccesses to a max.
What is tissue respiration? Process by which cells use oxygen
What is pulomary respiration? Process of supplying air to alveoli which make up ling tissue.
What does pleural fluid do? Lubricates the lungs. Aids breathing - pressure of fluid is lower than the atmospheric pressure therefor pushes pleural membrane towards the throatic cavity hence why the lungs move with the chest during breathing.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
