| What are concepts? | Mental categories in which we place objects, activities, abstractions, and events that have essential features in common. |
| What is mental set? | When people persist in using strategies that have worked in the past, but are no longer optimal. |
| What is a heuristic? | A rule of thumb or mental shortcut used in problem solving or decision making. |
| What is the availability heuristic? | Basing the estimated probability of an event on the ease of which relevant instances come to mind. (e.g. Is a person more likely to die from asthma or a tornado?) |
| What is confirmation bias? | The tendency to only seek information that is likely to support one’s decisions and beliefs. |
| What is functional fixedness? | The tendency to perceive an item only in terms of its most common use. |
