Matter Changes

Physical and Chemical Changes

QuestionAnswer
PHYSICAL PROPERTY Characteristic that distinguishes one type of matter from another. It can be observed without changing the identity of the substance
PHASE State in which matter can exist.
SOLID State in which matter has a definite shape and volume
CRYSTAL A solid in which the particles are arranged in a regular repeating pattern
LIQUID State in which matter has no definite shape but a definite volume
GAS State in which matter has no definite shape or volume
PLASMA State in which matter is extremely high in energy and cannot be contained by ordinary means
MELTING Change of matter from a solid to a liquid
MELTING POINT Temperature at which matter changes from the solid state to the liquid state
FREEZING Change of matter from a liquid to a solid
FREEZING POINT Temperature at which matter changes from the liquid phase to the solid phase
VAPORIZATION Change of matter from a liquid to a gas
BOILING Process in which particles insdie a liquid as well as those on the surface of a liquid change to a gas
BOILING POINT Temperature at which a substance changes from the liquid phase to the gas phase
EVAPORIZATION Change of matter from a liquid to a gas at the surface of the substance
CONDENSATION Change of matter from a gas to a liquid
SUBLIMATION Change of matter from the solid state directly to the gas state
AMORPHOUS SOLID Solids that do not form crystals and do not keep a definite shape. They behave like slow-moving liquids.
VISCOSITY The resistance of a liquid to flow
BOYLE'S LAW States that the volume of a fixed amount of gas changes inversely (opposite to) with the pressure
CHARLES' LAW States that the volume of a fixed amount of gas varies directly with the temperature
CHEMICAL PROPERTY Describes how a substance changes into a completely new substance and cannot be easily changed back to it's original form
FLAMMABILITY A chemical change - the ability to burn
CHEMICAL REACTION Often involve chemically combining different substances

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
