General Properties
properties of matter
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| MATTER | Anything that has mass and volume |
| PROPERTY | Characteristic of a substance |
| MASS | Amount of matter in an object A measure of the inertia in an object |
| WEIGHT | Measure of matter that is based on where an object is in relation to its gravitational pull |
| VOLUME | Amount of space an object takes up |
| DENSITY | Measurement of how much mass is in a given amount of volume of an object (Formula for density - D = M/V) |
| GENERAL PROPERTIES | Force of attraction between all objects in the universe |
| SPECIFIC PROPERTIES | Describe the differences among the forms of matter |
| The 4 general properties of matter are.... | Mass, Weight, Volume and Density |
| Mass is usually measured in | Grams or Kilograms |
| The weight of an object can change (vary)... | depending on where it is |
| Mass never changes unless .... | matter is added or is taken away from the object |
| Gravitational pull between objects becomes less ... | as the distance between objects increases |
| To measure liquid volume, the unit of measure used is | liters and milliliters |
| To measure solid volume, the unit of measure used is | cubic centimeters |
| The density of liquid water is | 1 gram per milliliter ( 1 g/mL) |
| Objects that float in water have a density that is | less than 1 g/mL |
| Objects that sink in water have a density that is | greater than 1 g/mL |
| GRAVITY | Force of attraction between all objects in the universe |
