Diagnostic Agents
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Radiopaque Agents 1)Barium Sulfate 2)Iodinated Contrast | -Visualization of organ structures -May contain iodine (assess for allergy) |
| Barium indications | GI evaluation-inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, ulcers |
| Barium clinical use | IV urography, angiography, cholecystography |
| Pharmacokinetics of Radiopaque Agents | administer PO, IV, Rectal, or Vaginal,- Absorbed across the GI mucosa + enter systemic circulation. Barium is NOT absorbed and is excreted by the kidneys. |
| Side Effects | usually occur in 1-3 min. but may occur up to 1 hour. Anaphylaxis, hypersensitivity, nausea, flushing w/warm feeling over abd./chest. Altered resp. status (rhinitis, cough, dyspnea, bronchospasm, asthma, laryngeal+pulmonary edema) |
| Barium Sulfate | May cause constipation (and poss. fecal impaction) if left in the colon |
| Diazote Salts | May inhibit blood coagulation. Intravascular injection may cause exacerbation of Sickle Cell disease |
| Assessment | Allergies to Tartrazine, contrast medias, iodine containing foods. Hx of kidney, liver, or thyroid disease. Pregnancy or >10 days since last period. |
| Radioactive Agents | Radionuclides image organs, evaluate organ function, detect or treat cancer. |
| Applications | to assess thyroid enlargement or disease. Screen clients w/ malignancies for metastasis. Evaluate heart disease. |
| Non-radioactive Agents | Dyes, polysaccharides and others. Evaluate cardiac output, liver/kidney function, blood flow, circulation time, and intestinal absorption |
| Administration | IV or IM. Traced by color changes or chemical analysis. |
