Somatoform and Dissociative Disorders

Hypochondriasis Severe anxiety about/fear of having a serious disease; chronic course
Somatization Disorder Symptoms become major part of person's identity and impair daily behavior and activities; chronic course
Conversion Disorder Physical malfunctioning without any physical or organic pathology; conversion of anxiety into physical symptoms.
Primary gain Reduction in anxiety that maintains conversion symptom
Secondary gain Attention and sympathy from loved ones.
Malingering Deliberately faking symptoms in order to gain or avoid something.
Factitious Disorder Deliberately faking symptoms for unspecified/unknown reasons.
Body Dysmorphic Disorder Preoccupation with an imagined defect in one's appearance; lifelong chronic course; frequent suicide attempts.
Percentage of cosmetic surgery requests that are made by BDD sufferers. 25%
Dissociative disorders alterations or detachments in consciousness or identity involving either dissociation or depersonalization.

Depersonalization Disorder A psychological mechanism whereby one dissociates from reality; lifelong chronic course.
Dissociative Amnesia Unable to recall anything, including one's identity; generalized, localized, fugue. Rapid onset and dissipation.
Dissociative Identity Disorder Alters, host, switch; chronic lifetime course, caused by trauma. 3-6% prevalance in US.
DID: Alters Different identities/personalities that develop.
DID: Host Identity that seeks treatment; tries to keep alters together.
DID: Switch Change from one identity to another; often instantaneous with physical feature changes.
