| BEAM – | An individual piece of a bridge that goes from one section to another.Also called members. |
| MEMBER – | An individual piece of a bridge that goes from one section to another. Also called beams. |
| DECK – | The roadway portion of a bridge that directly supports vehicles, people and everything that might use it, travel on. |
| DEAD LOAD – | The weight of the bridge itself. |
| LIVE LOAD – | the weight of anything on the bridge that adds stress; cars people trucks. Also includes environmental load. |
| ENVIRONMENTAL LOAD - | wind, water, temperature and/or earthquakes. Anything nature adds to the stress. |
| FATIGUE – | when bridge pieces become weak and could break (fail) from being used a lot. |
| PIER – | A vertical support or substructure unit that supports the spans of a multi-span superstructure at an intermediate location between its abutments. |
| SPAN – | The distance between piers, towers, or abutments. |
| STABLE – | The ability of a bridge to resist forces that can cause it to collapse. |
| SUBSTRUCTURE – | The parts of a bridge that are below the deck (roadway). |
| SUPERSTRUCTURE – | The parts of a bridge that are above the deck (roadway).. |
| TENSION – | A force that pulls or stretches. |
| TORSION – | A twisting force or action. |
| COMPRESSION – | inward pushing force |
| TRUSS – | A strong triangular pattern of bridge members allowing the bridge to be longer. |
