Ignition source Any process that is capable of causing a fire or explosion.
Flame A rapid, persistent chemical change that releases heat and light and is accompanied by flame
Pyrolysis Decomposition or transformation of a compound caused by heat
Heat of combustion The amount of heat released per unit mass or unit volume of a substance when the substance is completely burned
Flash point The lowest temperature at which the vapor of a combustible liquid can be made to ignite momentarily in air.
Fire point The lowest temperature at which a volatile combustible substance vaporizes rapidly enough to form above its surface an air-vapor mixture which burns continuously when ignited by a small flame.
Auto-ignition temperature is the lowest temperature at which a material will ignite without an external source of ignition
Limits of flammability refer to the conditions under which a mixture of a flammable material and air may catch fire or explode
Heat release rate The quantity of heat released per second, divided by its volume.
Toxic fumes gases that are poisonous or dangerous to people
Glowing and smouldering combustion A fire that burns without a flame and spreads very slowly
Self heating fire
self ignition becomes ignited without an external flame
fuel controlled combustion A fire that burns with its own fuel
ventilation controlled combustion A fire that is controlled by ventilation that removes the harmful fumes
