The Cycle of the Year

| Summer solstice | When the Sun reaches the northern extreme of the ecliptic |
| Arctic Circle | A circle of continuous daylight around the North Pole |
| Tropic | From Greek word "tropos" which means turning |
| Insolation | From Latin word "insolatio", which means to expose to the Sun |
| Autumnal equinox | A point of intersection on eastern half of celestial sphere between circles of ecliptic and celestial equator |
| Armillary sundial | A circular sundial. Best sundial design. Imitates shape of firmament and best corresponds to Sun's path |
