The Cycle of the Year

Tropical year Measured from time when Sun crosses celestial equator. Occurs around March 21st
Vernal equinox A point of intersection on western half of celestial sphere between circles of ecliptic and celestial equator
Equinox Comes from Latin word "aequus" which means equal and "nox" which means night
Summer solstice When the Sun reaches the northern extreme of the ecliptic
Arctic Circle A circle of continuous daylight around the North Pole
Tropic From Greek word "tropos" which means turning
Insolation From Latin word "insolatio", which means to expose to the Sun
Autumnal equinox A point of intersection on eastern half of celestial sphere between circles of ecliptic and celestial equator
Armillary sundial A circular sundial. Best sundial design. Imitates shape of firmament and best corresponds to Sun's path
Winter solstice When the Sun reaches the southern extreme of the ecliptic
Constellations associated with months Pisces (March), Aries (April), Taurus (May), Gemini (June), Cancer (July), Leo (August), Virgo (September), Libra (October), Scorpius (November), Sagittarius (December), Capricornus (January), Aquarius (February)
Time zones Pacific, mountain, central, eastern
Tropic of Cancer Defines northern extreme of tropics, zone of warm climate
Tropic of Capricorn Other end of tropics from Tropic of Cancer
