QuestionAnswer
acceleration of an object is in the same direction as the net force of an object newton's second law of motion
the force that opposes the sliding motion of two surfaces that are touching each other friction
the frictional force that prevents two surfaces from sliding past each other static friction
the force that opposes the motion of two surfaces sliding past each other sliding friction
opposes the motion of objects that move through the air air resistance
an attractive force between any two objects and depends on distance and mass gravity
the gravitational force exerted on an object weight
acceleration toward the center of a curved or circular path centripetal force
when one object exerts a force on a second object, the second on exerts a force on the first that is equal in strength and direction newton's third law of motion
the product of its mass and velocity momentum
what affects gravity distance and mass of object
what are the four basic forces? gravity, electromagnetic force, strong nuclear force, weak nuclear force
what does the law of universal gravitation state? as distance increases, the gravitational force decreases
what is earth's gravitational acceleration? 9.8 m/s^2
formula for force of gravity force= mass x acceleration
what is weight? gravitational force exerted on an object, measured in newtons
what is mass? the amount of matter in an object
free fall gives a feeling of weightlessness
what is projectile motion? forces pushes an object forward until friction slows down enough that gravity takes over.
what is centripetal force? the force exerted toward the center of a curved path;
what is centripetal acceleration? the acceleration toward the center of a curved or circular path
who was newton? (1642-1727)- described the effects of forces on the motion of objects
what does newton's first law state? an object at motion -> motion object at rest -> rest
what is inertia tendency for an object to resist change
what does newton's second law of motion state? the acceleration of an object is in the same direction as the net force on the object
new formula for acceleration acceleration= net force/ mass
what does newton's third law of motion state? for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
formula for momentum mass x velocity= momentum
what does law of conservation of momentum state? the momentum of an object doesn't unless the mass, velocity, or both change.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
