Science, Chapter 12

Newton's 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Laws; Gravity

QuestionAnswer
What is Newton's First Law of Motion? An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an outside, unbalanceed force.
For Equal Forces, a _______ mass accelerates _______. larger, greater
What is force measured in? Newtons(N)
Inertia is... Related to an objects mass.
What do all objects have? Inertia
What does one Newton equal? 1N= 1kg x 1m/s2
For equal masses, ________ force produces a _______ acceleration. greater, greater
What is Newton's 2nd Law of Motion? Net Force is equal to mass x acceleration. The unbalanced force on an object determines how much an object speeds up or slows down.
Inertia is realted to what? An object's mass
What is weight measuered in? Newtons(N)
Why is weight different from mass? Mass is the amount of matter in an objects, but weight is the gravitational force an object has.
What would happen in the absense of air resistence? All objects falling near Earth's surface accelerate at the same rate, regardless of their mass.
Through the force of what do all objects attract eachother? Gravity
Garvity increases as ______ increases. Mass
What can air resistence balance? Weight
Astronauts in orbit are in what? Free Fall
All matter is affected by what? Gravity
What does Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation give? The size of the gravitational force bewtween two objects.
Gravitational force decreases as _______ increases. Distance
What are the 2 components of Projectile Motion and what happens when they combine? horizontal and vertical; They form a curved path.
What is Newton's Thrid Law of Motion also called and what is it? The Law of Action and Reaction; For every action force, there is an equal and opposite reaction force.
What do forces always occur in? Pairs
Momentum increases as what increases? Mass and Velocity
Forces in a force pair do or do not act on the same object? Not
When Object A wxerts a force on Object B, what happens? Object B exerts a force equal in size and opposite in direction.
What are the SI units for momentum? kg x m/s
What does the Law of Conservation of Momentum say? The total momentum of two or more objects after a collision is the same as it was before the collision.
What is terminal velocity? The constant velocity of a falling object when the force of air resistence is equal in magniitude and opposite in direction of force.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
