science Sec. 3-1

science terms Sec. 3-1 Four States of Matter

QuestionAnswer
STATES OF MATTER the physical forms in which a substance can exist.
What are the four types of matter? solid, liquid, gas, and plasma
SOLID the state in which matter has a definite shape and volume
What type of solid has a very orderly arrangement? CRYSTALLINE SOLID
What type of solid has a disorderly arrangement? AMORPHOUS SOLID
Solids have a... definite shape and volume
Liquids have a... a definite volume, but change shape
LIQUID the state in which matter takes the shape of its container and has a definite volume
HYDRAULIC SYSTEM because particles in liquids are close to on and other, it is difficult to push them closer together.
SURFACE TENSION the force acting on the particles at the surface of a liquid that causes the liquid to form spherical drops
VISCOSITY liquid's resistance to flow
GAS is the state of matter that changes both volume and shape.
Gases have a... indefinite shape and volume
why can the volume of a gas change? as the gas is released from an enclosed space, the atoms spread out, therefor, creating more room to move around.
PRESSURE the amount of force exerted on a given area.
BOYLE'S LAW states that for a fixed amount of gas at a constant temperature, the volume a gas increases as its pressure increases.
CHARLES'S LAW states that for a fixed amount of gas at a constant pressure, the volume of a gas increases as its temperature decreases.
PLASMA the state of matter that does not have a definite shape or volume and whose particles have broken apart
Plasma has a... indefinite shape or volume and whose particles have broken apart.
True or false: Plasma and gases conduct electricity. FALSE- ONLY PLASMA DOES
NATURAL PLASMA found in fire, lightning, and light

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
