Element Pure substance that cannot be broken down or separated into smaller substances physically OR chemically.
Pure Substance Substance with only one type of particle.
Characteristic Properties An element’s unique set of properties.
Metals Shiny elements that are good conductors of thermal energy and electric current.
Non-metals Dull elements that are poor conductors of thermal energy and electric current.
Metalloids Elements with properties from both metals and nonmetals.
Compound Pure substance composed of 2+ chemically combined elements.
Mixture Combination of 2+ substances not chemically combined.
Solution Mixture that appears to be a single substance, but consists of particles of 2+ substances distributed equally amongst each other.
Solute Substance that is dissolved.
Solvent Substance in which solute is dissolved.
Soluble Being able to be dissolved
Insoluble Unable to be dissolved
Homogenous Mixture Mixture in which particles cannot be seen
Heterogeneous Mixture Mixture in which particles are large enough to be seen
Concentration Measure of the amount of solute dissolved in the solvent
Solubility Amount of solute that will dissolve in solvent
Dilute Small amount of solute inside the solvent
Saturated Solution Solution that contains all the solute it can hold at a given temperature
Unsaturated Solution Solution that contains less than the maximum amount of solute it can hold at a given temperature
Suspension A mixture in which particles are spread among a liquid or gas and the particles can settle
Colloid A mixture in which particles are spread among a liquid or gas but the particles cannot settle
