Element pure substances that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical change
Pure substance is a substance in which there is only one type of particle
Characteristic properties a property of a substance that is always the same no matter what size it is
Metals are elements that are shiny and are good conductors of thermal energy and electrical currents
Non-metals are elements that are dull and that are poor conductors
Metalloids elements that have properties of both metals and non-metals
Compound pure substance composed of two or more element that are chemically combined
Mixture combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined
Solution mixture that appears to be a single substance but is composed of particles of two or more substances that are distributed evenly amongst each other
Solute the substance that is dissolved to form a solution
Solvent substance in which a solute is dissolved to form a solution
Soluble able to dissolve
Insoluble unable to dissolve
Homogeneous Mixture Same appearance and properties throughout the mixture
Heterogeneous Mixture A combination of substances in which different components are easily observed
Concentration The amount of solute dissolved in a solvent
Solubility The amount of solute needed to make a saturated solution using a given amount of solvent at a certain temperature
Dilute To make thinner or weaker by mixing or dispersing
Saturated Solution A solution that contains all the solute it can hold at a given temperature
Unsaturated Solution Contains less solute than it can hold at a given temp
Suspension A mixture in which particles of a material are dispersed throughout a liquid or gas but are large enough that they settle out
Colloids The particles are dispersed throughout but are not large enough to settle out
