Homogeneous mixture A combination of substances in which properties and appearance are the same throughout
Heterogeneous mixture A combination of substances in which different components are easily observed
Dilute Made thinner or weaker by having had water or another solvent added to it
Saturated solution A solution that contains less solute than it can hold
Suspension A mixture in which particles of a material are dispersed throughout a liquid or a gas but are large enough to settle out. The particles are insoluble.
Colloids A mixture in which the particles are dispersed throughout but aren’t heavy enough to settle. The particles are relatively small and fairly well mixed.
Element A pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means.
Pure Substance A substance in which there is only one type of particle.
Characteristic Properties Boiling point, melting point, density
Metals Elements that are shiny and are good conductors of thermal and electrical current.
Non-metals Elements that are dull and poor conductors of thermal and electrical energy.
Metalloids Elements that have both metal and non-metal properties.
Compound Pure substance of two or more elements that are chemically combined.
Mixture Combination of two or more substances that are physically combined.
Solution Mixture that appears to be a single substance but is composed of particles of two or more substances that are distributed evenly amongst each other.
Solute Substance that is dissolved.
Soluble The ability to dissolve
Solvent Substance in which the solute is dissolved.
Insoluble The inability to dissolve
Concentration A measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent
Solubility The amount of solute needed to make saturated solution using a given amount of solvent at a certain temperature
Unsaturated solution A solution that contains less solute than it can hold
