| Element | A pure substance that cannot be separated into similar substances by physical or chemical means |
| Pure Substance | A substance in which there is only one type of particle |
| Characteristic Properties | A property of a substance that is always the same whether the sample observed is large or small |
| Metals | Elements that are shiny and are good conductors of thermal energy and electric current |
| Non-Metals | Elements that have properties that are dull and are poor conductors of thermal energy and electric current |
| Metalloids | Elements that have properties of both metals and non-metals |
| Compound | A pure substance composed of two or more elements that are chemically combined |
| Mixture | A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined |
| Solution | A mixture that appears to be a single substance but is composed of particles of two or more substances that are distributed evenly amongst each other |
| Solute | The substance that is dissolved |
| Solvent | The substance in which solute is dissolved |
| Soluble- | Able to dissolve in solvent |
| Insoluble- | Unable to dissolve |
| Homogeneous mixture- | Mixtures with the same appearances and properties |
| Heterogeneous mixture- | A combination of substances, in which different components are easily observed |
| Concentration- | A measure of the amount of solute dissolved. |
| Solubility- | The amount of solute needed to make saturated solution using a given amount of solvent at a certain temperature. |
| Dilute- | Solutions that contain less solvent |
| Saturated solution- | A solution that contains saturated solution. |
| Unsaturated solution- | A substance that does not contain saturated solution |
| Suspension- | A mixture in which particles of a material are dispersed throughout a liquid or gas, but are large enough to settle out |
| Colloids- | A mixture in which the particles are dispersed throughout but are not heavy enough to settle |
