| functionalism | the theory of mental life and behavior that is concerned with how an organism uses its perceptual abilities to function in its environment |
| psychology | the scientific study of behavior and mental processes |
| nature-nurture issue | the issue of the degree to which environment and heredity influence behavior |
| natural selection | the theory that states specific traits allow certain organisms to be more adapted to their environment, which allows them to pass on their genes |
| basic research | the investigation of some phenomena without reference to particular human needs and wants |
| applied research | the investigation of some phenomena to discover whether its properties are appropriate to a particular need or want |
| clinical psychology | the branch of psychology concerned with the assessment and treatment of mental illness and disability |
| psychiatry | a medical specialty dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders |
