Wave Test Mr. Young
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Energy | is the ability to cause change. |
| Waves | are rhythmic disturbances carry energy without carrying matter. |
| Mechanical Waves | Travel as energy is transferred from particle to particle. |
| Medium | is the matter that carries energy. |
| A Transverse Wave | causes matter in the medium to move up and down or back and forth at right angles the direction that the wave travels. |
| A compressional wave | moves matter back and forth in the same direction that wave is moving. |
| Sound Waves are | Compressional Waves. |
| Seismic waves | are caused by vibrating in the ground. |
| There are 3 types of Seimic waves: | Primary(P)Waves, Secondary(S)Waves, and Surface(L) Waves. |
| Primary wave | Oscillates back and forth along the direction the wave travels. |
| Secondary Wave | Oscillates perpendicular to the direction of wave motion. |
| Surface Wave | Causes horizontal and sometimes vertical ground movement. |
| Electromagnetic waves is | energy that can travel through space that has no matter. |
| Electromagnetic Spectrum: | Radio Waves, miscro waves, infrarred, ROYGBIV, Ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma. |
| Amplitude | of a transverse wave is 1/2 the distance between a crest and a trough. |
| The larger the amplitude, | the more energy the wave will carry. |
| Wavelength is the distancde between crest and the next crest or trough to the next trough on a transverse wave and on a compressional wave | it is the distance between the center of a compression to the center of the next compression, or center on the rarefaction to the center of the next rarefaction. |
| Frequency is | the number of waves that pass a point in 1 second and is measured in wavelengths per second or Hertz (Hz) |
| Blue has a | short wavelength and red has a long wavelength. |
| Light | travels through theair at 300 million m/s(3x10^5 m/s) Sound travels through the air at 340 m/s. |
| Reflection occurs when | a wave bounces off a surface. |
| Refraction occurs when | waves are bent as they pass from one medium to another. |
| Diffraction | is the bending of waves around a barrier. |
| Violet | bends more than red. |
| Constructive interference | occurs when crests pverlap and combine with each other. |
| Destructive interference | occurs when a crest and a trough overlap and the amplitudes amount out or form a small crest. |
