Adverse Drug Reaction Any noxious, unintended, & undesired effect that occurs at NORMAL drug doses - those taking multiple drugs, the very young & very old are at increased risk
Side Effect A nearly unavoidable secondary drug effect produced at therapeutic doses
Toxicity Adverse drug reaction caused by excessive dosing (sometimes may occur at normal dosing - neutropenia from anti-CA drugs)
Allergic Reaction Immune response - determined mostly by the degree of sensitization of the immune system - very few drugs cause this
Idiosyncratic Effect Uncommon drug response d/t genetic predisposition (ex. succinylcholine-induced paralysis)
Iatrogenic Disease Drug- or physician-induced disease - essentially identical to naturally occurring pathology (dopamine -> schizophrenia)
Physical Dependence Develops during long-term use of certain drugs - body has adapted to the point that abstinence syndrome would occur if use is discontinued
Carcinogenic Effect Causes cancer
Teratogenic Effect Causes birth-defects
Hepatotoxic Drugs Leading cause of liver failure in US - don't combine hepatotoxic drugs
QT Interval Drugs Prolong QT interval - risk of torsades de pointes, a dysrhythmia that can progress to fatal V-fib
Medication Errors Any preventable event that -> inappropriate medication use or patient harm.
