|---|---|
| What is Chemistry? | Study of matter. |
| What is matter? Is air an example? What about light and sound? | Anything that has mass and takes up space. Air is matter. Light and sound are not. |
| What are atoms? Are they matter? | The smallest unit of an element. Yes, atoms are matter. |
| What is an element? | Simplest Substance. |
| What is a compoud? | Two different elements chemically combined. |
| What is a molecule? | Smallest Substnace. |
| What is a chemcial formula? What are the symbols and numbers used for? | The combination of chemical symbols & numbers to represent a substance. |
| What is a pure substance? | Single element/Single compound |
| What is a mixture? | A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined. |
| Why are products we find in the grocery store though labeled "pure" substance not pure by scientific means? | Because they have added things like suger in them. |
| How do you classify mixtures? | Heterogenous and Homogeneous |
| How do you classify mixtures when they are made up of two more liquids? | Misable and Immisable |
| Can gases mix with liquids? Example? | Yes, soda. |
| What do physical properites of matter describe? | A characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change, such as density, hardness, or color. |
| What are some examples of physical properities of matter? | Color, Texture |
| What can physcial properities be used for? How might it be helpful to know them? | So we can know how it feels. |
| What do chemical properities of matter describe? | A property of matter that describes a substance's ability to participate in chemical properties. |
| What are some examples of of chemical properites of matter? | Flamability, reacts with... |
| What can physical properties be used for? How mught it be helpful to know them? | Identifying a substance. |
| What is a physical change? | A change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemucal properties. |
| What are some examples of physical changes matter can undergo? What about dissolving? | Melting. Yes. |
| Can physical changes be undo? | Yes. |
| What is a chemical change? | A change that occures when a substance changes composition by forming one or more new substances. |
| What are some examples of chemical changes matter can undergo? | Burning, baking, cooking. |
| Can chemical changes be undone by physcial means? | No. |
| What are some signs that a chemical change is taking place. | Odor, bubbling. |
| Homogeneous is... | The components of the mixture are evenly distributed, and the mixture is the same throughout. |
| Hetergeneous is... | Composed of dissimilar components. The substances are not uniformly mixed and are not evenly distributed. |
| Miscible is... | Describe two or more liquids that can dissolce into each other in various proportions. |
| Immiscible is... | Describe two or more liquids that do not mix with each other. |
| Example of Miscible is... | Gasoline |
| Example of Imiscible is... | Oil/Water |
| Indicators of Chemical Change... | Bubbling, foaming, fizzing, color change, heat given off, sound, odor, percipiate forms, fire. |
