Alpha-Blockers
Fundamentals II
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Phentolamine | non-selective, competitive antagonist, IV/short duration, dilates BV, histamine release, cholinergic properties -> constricts pupils, used in ER for HTN & shock, orthostatic hypotension & reflex tachycardia |
| Phenoxybenzamine | non-selective, irreversible antagonist, long duration, dec. BP, no histamine release or cholinergic effects, pheochromocytoma & raynoids, tachycardia |
| Prazosin | selective, competitive antagonist, long duration, dec cholesterol, dec BP, inc HDL, no tachycardia, used for HTN & prostate, initial syncope but tolerance develops |
| Terazosin | selective, competitive antagonist, less potent than Prazosin, but long-lasting, dec. cholesterol, dec. BP, no tachycardia, used for BPH & HTN, minor syncope |
| Doxazosin | selective, competitive antagonist, less potent than Prazosin, but long-lasting, dec. cholesterol, dec. BP, no tachycardia, used for BPH & HTN, minor syncope |
| Tamsulosin | selective, competitve antagonist, long duration shrinks prostate, used for BPH |
| Reserpine | neuronal blocker, works by depletion via K+ ATPase inhibition & MAO action, long duration, PO & IV, dilates BV, stops diarrhea, not pupil dilation, used for HTN, can cause depression b/s enters CNS |
| Guanethidine | neuronal blocker, works via displacement, long duration, PO & IV, used for emergency HTN, unfortunately pts develop tolerance and can cause diarrhea |
| Guanedrel | neuronal blocker, works via displacement, long duration, PO & IV, used for emergency HTN, unfortunately pts develop tolerance and can cause diarrhea |
| Metyosine | neuronal blocker, methylates NE, dec BP, no longer used b/c fast tolerance |
| Yohimbine | alpha-2 blocker, used for erectile dysfunction, adverse effects include seizures, acts like NE in brain and can induce anxiety attacks |
